This Merlot opens with inviting aromas of ripe black cherry, plum, and raspberry, layered with subtle notes of cocoa, vanilla, and warm baking spice. Medium-bodied, with soft, rounded tannins and a smooth, velvety texture, it delivers the richness of a classic Merlot with an approachable Texas charm. Dry yet fruit-forward, with balanced acidity and a lingering, silky finish, this red wine is easy to love and even easier to enjoy.
Smooth enough to sip solo, but always better with good company.
meet the inspiration
The counterpart to The Peggy Sue, our grandfather spent his life working the land, primarily as a cattle rancher. Through him, our family developed the farming and ranching roots that generations later would help inspire Rio Neches. He was one of the kindest and most loving people you could know, always eager to share what he raised, grew, and worked so hard for with the people he loved.
He was reunited with the Lord in February of 2014, but the roots he left behind continue to run deep in our family. His legacy even lives on in Sydney, who proudly carries his name as his namesake. The Rancher is our tribute to the man who gave us our connection to the land and so much of the foundation on which Rio Neches was built.

MEET THE GRAPE
Merlot - Bordeaux's Smooth and Charming ‘Blackbird’
Often celebrated as the softer, more approachable cousin of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot has a rich history and a personality all its own. Originating in the Bordeaux region of France, Merlot has been charming wine lovers for centuries with its smooth texture, generous fruit flavors, and easygoing nature. Its name is believed to come from the French word merle, meaning "blackbird," possibly inspired by the grape's deep blue-black color or the little birds' fondness for snacking on its ripe berries. Although Merlot has long played a supporting role alongside Cabernet Sauvignon in Bordeaux's famous red blends, this versatile grape has proven it can shine just as brightly on its own. Today, Merlot is grown in vineyards around the world, from the rolling hills of Tuscany to the sun-soaked vineyards of California and Texas. Known for its velvety texture, luscious fruit character, and softer tannins, Merlot has earned a reputation as one of the world's most beloved red wine grapes. But don't let its gentle nature fool you—Merlot has plenty of character beneath that smooth exterior!
Merlot is particularly admired for its ability to produce wines that are both beautifully expressive and wonderfully approachable. Depending on where it is grown and how it is crafted, Merlot can range from light and fruit-forward to rich, full-bodied, and remarkably complex. Its signature flavors often include ripe plum, black cherry, and blackberry, complemented by subtle notes of chocolate, vanilla, cedar, and baking spices. In warmer climates, such as Texas, Merlot can develop especially generous dark fruit flavors and a plush, rounded mouthfeel, while cooler growing regions tend to bring out brighter red fruit and delicate herbal characteristics. Its naturally supple tannins create a smooth, velvety finish, making it a favorite for those who enjoy a flavorful red wine without the bold intensity of Cabernet Sauvignon. Whether enjoyed on its own or blended with other varieties, Merlot brings a beautiful balance of richness, elegance, and approachability to every glass. After all, sometimes the quietest grape in the vineyard has the most to say!
